Dr. Selena Hsiao


Selena Hsiao was Senior Statistician of the Woolf Fisher Research Centre (The University of Auckland). Her work focused on the analysis of longitudinal data, in particular the use of hierarchical linear modelling. As Senior Statistician on national, regional and large-scale interventions, she has led teams of statisticians, and has provided support and advise on data analysis and management to schools, external contractors and Ministry. Selena now works in the private sector.

Stuart is a Professor at the Faculty of Education, University of Auckland and Director of the Woolf Fisher Research Centre (The University of Auckland). He is the Chief Education Scientific Advisor to the New Zealand Ministry of Education. He has been inducted into the Reading Association Hall of Fame. His research interests are in in literacy and language development, the design of effective educational programmes for culturally and linguistically diverse populations and cultural processes in development. A major focus has been the design, testing and scaling up of an intervention model for schools (The Learning Schools Model) which substantially raises literacy achievement.



[Dr. Aaron Wilson]

Aaron is a Lecturer in English and Literacy at the Faculty of Education (The University of Auckland). He has recently led or co-led large-scale interventions to improve literacy achievement in secondary schools. Aaron’s research interests are in the area of subject area literacy teaching in secondary schools and professional development. Aaron was the recipient of the Marie Clay Literacy Trust Research Scholarship to complete his PhD (2009, 2010 and 2011). Aaron has also been a consultant for the New Zealand Ministry of Education. Aaron was a former Head of Department (English).

Mei is Associate Director of the Woolf Fisher Research Centre and Senior Lecturer at the Faculty of Education (The University of Auckland). Over the last decade, she has led or co-led multiple national and large-scale interventions to improve teaching and school practices. Mei is co-designer of The Learning Schools Model, a school intervention model which has substantially raised literacy achievement. Her co-authored book “Practitioner Research For Educators” was nominated for the “American Association of Colleges for Teacher Education” Outstanding Book Award for books that make a significant contribution to teacher education. Mei has also been a consultant for the New Zealand Ministry of Education.

Dr. Sarah Vander Zanden is an assistant professor at the University of N. Iowa in the Literacy Education Division. Her work focuses on critical literacy practices, language use in instructional contexts, formative assessment, and multimodal discourse analysis.
