Dr. Becky Xi Chen
Associate Professor
Department of Applied Psychology and Human Development, University of Toronto

Dr. Chen's research focuses on bilingual and ELL (English Language Learner) children’s language and literacy development. She is interested in how children develop literacy skills simultaneously in their first language and second language, and whether these skills transfer between the two languages. She recently completed a multi-year longitudinal study in a French immersion school in Canada where school instruction was provided entirely in French. The results support transfer of language and literacy skills between English and French and demonstrate that ELLs have similar trajectories as English first language children in French immersion despite learning three languages (English, French, and L1) simultaneously.
